Purpose: LEED Gold Certification – Renewable Energy Contribution

Overview

The Co-operators' new national head office in Guelph, Ontario is more than just a corporate facility—it's a flagship example of sustainable building design. Purposefully crafted with employee wellness, environmental responsibility, and energy efficiency in mind, the site stands as a true reflection of The Co-operators' values and long-term vision.

To help meet the rigorous energy standards of LEED Gold Certification, Informed Energy was brought on to design and install a high-performance rooftop solar array. The solar system not only contributes significantly to the building’s sustainability goals but also symbolizes a visible commitment to green leadership.

The Challenge

Achieving LEED Gold status requires careful integration of energy efficiency, renewable energy, and design innovation. One requirement was that at least 20% of the building’s annual electricity usage be supplied by on-site renewable generation. However, the roof—like many commercial structures—includes a raised mechanical penthouse, which casts shade during different parts of the day.

Our challenge was to design a system that maximized energy production while avoiding these obstructions.

The Solution

Informed Energy conducted a shading analysis and strategically designed the solar layout to avoid performance losses. The result was a flat rooftop solar PV system using the highest-wattage panels available at the time—maximizing available space and output.

  • Installed System: 250 kW AC / 280 kW DC
  • Design Consideration: Avoid shading from the rooftop penthouse
  • Performance Goal: Supply ≥20% of annual electricity to meet LEED Gold energy credits

Results

The system fulfills all five energy points required under the LEED Gold renewable energy threshold—delivering on performance, aesthetics, and long-term energy value.

  • LEED Impact: Contributes directly to LEED Gold certification
  • Design Integration: Clean, modern rooftop installation with minimal visual disruption
  • System Aesthetics: Designed to look as good as it performs

Looking Ahead

Informed Energy helped future-proof this project by overbuilding the electrical infrastructure, ensuring that additional panels and inverters can be added without needing to replace existing systems. If an expansion or new addition is constructed, the solar system is ready to scale with it—maximizing ROI and sustainability.

Why It Matters

This project demonstrates how corporate sustainability goals can be embedded in building design from the ground up. By incorporating solar at the planning stage, The Co-operators not only reduced their environmental impact but also reinforced their role as a Canadian leader in responsible business practices.
